A friend of mine once asked if he could go with her son and her shopping for the day. When she brought him home, she was curious if he knew everyone because wherever they went people were stopping and either
speaking or talking to JD. I could never take him shopping with me, he would not stay with me. When he would go to church with me, he would not stay with me....I soon realized that he was making his rounds in the
congregation. There wasn't anyone he left out. He touched everyone there. Young or old it didn't matter. The older ladies in the church were devastated when he down her back. He didn't understand and I told him
that she loved him and after that he greeted her each time with open arms. She is about 17 now, but still runs to him. My great niece calls him "Her Marine."
Even before he graduated high school he wanted to be a "Marine." James and I tried to talk him out of it. Because we knew that when there is trouble, Marines are the first in and the last out. He would not be deterred.
We were trying to clean the yard after Hurricane Ivan and James had downed timber that he was getting cut into lumber to build the camp with. JD worked sick with diaveticuitus (Stomach condition) until the last board
was cut. Then went to the doc and spent 3 days in the hospital getting over that. When he turned 18, and finished helping with that timber he joined the Corps on his own without our signatures. He loved being a
Marine. But it was not to be so. He was on a training expedition getting ready to go overseas when he started having the seizures and had to come home.
The first Sunday he was at home and went to church, it was annonunced that a gentleman in our church was in desperate need of a kidney. JD made his way to that family and found out the details. He came back to
me and asked if I knew. I told him I did. He said, "I'm gonna give him one of mine." From that day to this he has not waivered in the committment to that man to give him a kidney. It has been a journey that began last
Feb. The surgery will take place next Monday at UAB.
I know the Marine Corps gives medals for extraordinary service. I am not asking for that. Is it possible for at least one Marine to come and have a presence for him when he is in surgery on Monday? I have read stories
about Marines being in the hospital or the Marine Corps having an Honor Gaurd there for this or that reason. JD is saving this man's life. He has not asked for any favors or payment of any kind. He is doing this
because it is the right thing to do. He said that after the surgery, he AND Mr. Roy will have a kidney and feel good. He has not worked since he came home in waiting for this day to happen. He did not want a job to get
in the way of this surgery. He does have a job waiting for him after he heals.
He does not know that I am writing you. Doesn't he deserve a Marine Honor Guard for his service? I truly believe that JD has been a Marine all his life. I also believe that he is showing those Marine qualities and
upholding the Marine Corps creed in doing this service for this man and his family.
If it is possible for this to happen. I will let you know the time as soon as I find out. He will have to be there Sunday afternoon to register for the surgery.
